After over 95% of votes have been counted in the Turkish Presidential elections it appears that while Prime Minister Erdogan has won over 51% of the vote nationwide, in the Kurdish provinces Selahattin Demirtas has taken a majority of the votes cast. In the event of Erdogan gaining over 50% of the votes there will be no need for a second round of voting in two weeks’ time.
While HDP candidate Selahattin Demirtas received a majority of the votes in most of the cities won by the HDP in recent municipal elections, his share of the total votes cast nationwide is around 9.6%. This marks a more than 2% increase on the vote received by the HDP/BDP at the local elections.
Over 60% say Demirtas in Amed and Batman
In the provinces of Hakkari and Sirnak, Selahattin Demirtas received over 80% of the votes cast, and in the largest city in North Kurdistan, Amed (Diyarbakir), he received over 63% of the votes, and also gained over 60% in the city of Batman. In the following districts the HDP candidate won over 80% of votes cast: Varto, Nusaybin, Cizre, Uludere and Silopi, and in Baskale, Yüksekova and Lice HDP candidate Demirtas received over 90% of the votes cast.
ROBOSKI
In the village of Roboski in the Uludere district of Sirnak province, where 34 villagers were killed in an aerial bombardment in 2011, Demirtas received 462 votes, Erdogan 15 and Ihsanoglu 6. It is reported that 21 soldiers on duty in the village voted.
Increase in votes in Mersin and Adana
Selahattin Demirtas increased the HDP’s vote in cities near the Mediterranean. In Mersin he received over 13% of votes cast, more than 4% higher than in the local elections. In Adana and Antalya, too, the HDP’s vote increased by 3%. Demirtas also received more than half a million votes in Turkey’s most populous city, Istanbul.
HDP increases share of votes in provinces
According to unofficial and temporary results of the presidential election announced by the YSK (Supreme Election Board), the ruling AKP’s leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been elected as president in the first popular vote in the nation’s history.
In a statement to the press, an official of the YSK said Erdogan has received the absolute majority vote, and there will be no second round of election. YSK will announce the figures on Monday.
The rate of votes for Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) candidate Selahattin Demirtas has remarkably increased in western cities in comparison to the share of votes the party received in March’s local elections.
The biggest increase in the HDP votes has been in the southern province of Mersin where the party increased its votes from 9,6 to 13,8 percent.
ANTALYA
Compared to the results of the local elections, HDP increased its votes by 3,1 in Antalya where 5,4 of the voters chose Demirtas.
MERSIN
Demirtas has received 13,8 percent of the votes in Mersin where the HDP was supported by 9,6 of the voters in local elections. The rate of increase is 4,2 percent.
ADANA
Winning 10,4 percent of the votes in Adana, Demirtas increased the party’s share in the city by 3 percent.
OSMANIYE
2,8 percent of the voters supporter Demirtas in Osmaniye, increasing the HDP’s share of votes by 2,8 percent in comparison to the results of local elections.
HATAY
Receiving 3,6 percent of votes in Hatay, Demirtas increased HDP’s votes by 2,3 compared to the 1,3 percent of local elections.
BURDUR
2 percent of the voters supported Demirtas in Burdur where HDP’s votes recorded an increase by 1,7 when compared to local elections in March.
ISPARTA
HDP’s presidential candidate has been supported by 1,7 percent of voters in Isparta, recording an increase by 1,4 in comparison to the local elections. (ANF, August 10, 2014)
