We would like to invite you to our reception on Friday February 24th, from 18h onwards at De Markten, Brussels. With this reception we would like to thank everyone who supported the campaign against the prosecution of several major Kurdish associations, media and politicians in Belgium. They are being prosecuted on “terrorism” charges at the insistence of the Turkish state, which has pressed charges as a civil party in the Belgian court case.
During the reception advocate Joke Callewaert and former Kurdish MP Zübeyir Aydar – a member of the board of the Kurdistan National Congress (KNK) and one of the defendants in the trial – will tell us more about the proceedings of the trial. After which you are invited to enjoy delicious Kurdish snacks and drinks, during which the campaign can be discussed in a more informal and enjoyable setting.
As you might have already heard, the first verdict in this case was a great relief to all those concerned. The Brussels court ‘Raadkamer’ decided on November 3, 2016 that the Turkish-Kurdish conflict should be considered as an “armed conflict” and that the terrorism law can therefore not be applied. The campaign during the first trial was a strong voice against the erosion of freedoms and democracy and against abuse of anti-terror laws out of political motives in Belgium.
Not much later, however, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office appealed against this verdict, which means the prosecution of the Kurdish organizations and individuals is continuing. During the reception, we will discuss how the support campaign can go on.
