We condemn the arrest of the CHP MP Enis Berberoğlu

The coup targeting democracy, a process that began on 20 May 2016 with the lifting of parliamentary immunity in Parliament, continued with tens of municipal co-Chairs being arrested, the appointment of government trustees to elected municipal offices and, on November 4, the taking hostage of our Co-Chairs and our members of parliament.

The arrest, today, of Enis Berberoğlu, CHP Member of Parliament for Istanbul, is part, and a continuation of this process.

Our country is passing through a period where universal human rights and principles of law are violated and disregarded in a worse manner every day.

During this period, when the level of repression increases constantly, those who support democratic values must expand the struggle for equality, freedom and justice.

We would once again like to remind all that those who, today, try to extend their rule by way of all manners of unlawfulness are those who, tomorrow, will most need a platform of law and justice.

As the HDP, we would once again try to underline that we will not bow down to this coup (process) targeting the field of democratic politics and opposition parties.

Our struggle will grow for the freedom of all MPs, municipal Co-Chairs, and democratic politicians -first and foremost our Co-Chairs and members of parliament.
