The Eurasia Survey Centre has released the results of a new poll it conducted on the upcoming constitutional reform referendum.
According to the poll, 56% of the people it surveyed were against the new constitution proposed by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and backed in parliament by the ultra-right wing Nationalist Movement Party (MHP).
Of those that voted for the AKP in the previous general elections, 39% said they were going to vote against the proposed reforms, the poll showed.
One of the questions in the poll asked respondents if they thought opposition Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) co-leader Selahatting Demirtas would still have been imprisoned if he had said ‘yes’ to the AKP’s proposal of a presidential system, to which 75% of respondents said ‘no’ he would not have been arrested and imprisoned.
Pollsters in Turkey have already conducted several major surveys to gauge public opinion for the referendum set for 16 April. Results of those that have been announced have generally shown the ‘no’ camp to be ahead, with the government reluctant to announce the results of polls that it has commissioned.
