Refuting Turkish President Erdoğan’s remarks that the ISIS member related to the bomb attacks in Brussel had been extradited to Belgium by Turkey, Belgium’s Minister of Justice said, “This person was sent to the Netherlands, not our country.”

Turkish President Erdoğan had claimed İbrahim el-Bakraoui, the ISIS member related to the bomb attacks in Brussels, had been extradited to Belgium by Turkey.

Belgium’s Ministry of Justice and the Federal prosecutor’s office declared there had been no extradition and the man in question had been sent to the Netherlands by Turkey.

The Netherlands declared they would be investigating the matter.

In a statement, Turkish President Erdoğan had claimed one of the Brussels attackers was caught by Turkey and extradited to Belgium.

Belgian officials’ reply was swift. Belgium’s Minister of Justice Koen Geens said, “There was no extradition. This person was sent to the Netherlands, not our country.”

According to Belgian media, the Federal prosecutor also denied claims of extradition.

The Netherlands declared they would investigate the matter.

It is still unclear why the Belgium national ISIS member was sent by Turkey to the Netherlands and not Belgium.
