“The Virgin with the Child” by director Bêrivan Binevsa, premiered at the Ostend film festival

None other than Bêrîvan Binevşa is the maker and director of this film. Bêrîvan, our loyal colleague from the French-speaking wing of the Kurdish Institute, is definitely not making her debut. She studied at the Inraci Film School in Brussels, shot her first short films in 2003 and 2004 and her first documentary in 2006. She received prizes at various festivals for her achievements.

‘The Virgin with the Child’ may be a fictional story, but it is all the more based on historical and social reality. Namely the genocide and slave trade that took place in Iraqi Kurdistan against the Yazidi population. With ‘La Vierge à l’Enfant’ Bêrivan Binevsa sketches a tragic story about an individual and collective trauma. The Ostend Film Festival will be the world premiere for this impressive masterpiece.

The story is briefly outlined as follows: “Avesta, a Kurdish Yazidi, arrives in Brussels after escaping from the hands of the Islamic State in Iraq. All she wants is to take revenge on the man who has taken and abused her as a slave. Between a frantic search for justice, which confronts her with the suffering she has endured, and the obligation of being the mother of an unwanted child, Avesta tries to make her voice heard at all costs.”

There will be a second performance on Thursday, February 1 at 4:30 PM in the Kinepolis in Ostend. The short film ‘Orange Flavored Love’ is part of the supporting program that afternoon. Below is a summary of the dates and times, including a link to purchase tickets for both performances.
