Arrests, torture, rapes, kidnappings and killings have become part of everyday life. Particularly affected is the Kurdish population that has become an easy target for the state. We monitor the evolution of Iran and western Kurdistan with great concern.

Kurds as a people are collectively punished. They are brought to trial on unjust grounds. The trials do not measure up to the requirements of international conventions for what is considered a fair hearing within a reasonable time. The right to defense, self expression and basic human rights are breached. In addition, many are sentenced and imprisoned on the flimsiest of evidence. According to human rights organizations, there are currently 14 people from a Kurdish background who have sentenced to death and are now awaiting execution on death row.

One of those convicted is 31 year old Sherko Marefî. Marefi dedicated himself and worked tirelessly for the Kurdish people. He has now been imprisoned and has suffered torture. Marefi faced a mere formality of a court, the trial lasting only a few minutes. Immediately after, Marefi was sentenced to death. The execution is due to take place on 1 May 2011.

We as a human rights organization, "Kurdocide Watch CHAK," in response to these injustices hereby strongly request the Swedish foreign minister and the political parties to act and to speak out against executions in Iran. Marefi’s execution must be stopped and he must be released immediately.

The regime in Iran is characterized by systematic and organized efforts by the armed forces against the Kurdish people. They will stop at nothing, it seems, and carry out all manner of violence and oppression. Random and unlawful arrests continue in the region. Harsh punishments in rigged courts always follow the arrests.

The United Nations and the European Union must ensure that such events are uncovered and they must act against both the physical and mental, inhumane and tragic oppression against the Kurdish population in Eastern Kurdistan (Iran). Democratic countries, international human rights organizations and the public should respond to Iran’s crude methods against the Kurds. All executions in Iran, including Marefi’s must be stopped. It is time to take action to end the oppression of the Kurdish people and create a serious dialogue.

We as an organization for human rights “CHAK Kurdocide Watch”, are ready and prepared to partner with you. Together we can find solutions on how best to eliminate the oppression that exists today in Iran.
