Tegelijkertijd krijgt Turkije ook te maken met het Koerdisch nationalisme en een groeiende invloed van de politieke islam. Deze ontwikkelingen vormen een uitdaging voor de homogene en seculiere fundamenten, mythes en verhalen waarop de Turkse republiek is gebaseerd en hebben nieuwe politieke projecten in het middelpunt van de belangstelling gezet.
