Niemand minder dan Bêrîvan Binevşa is maakster en regisseur van deze film. Bêrîvan, onze trouwe collega van de Franstalige vleugel van het Koerdisch Instituut, is hiermee absoluut niet aan haar debuut. Zij studeerde aan de Inraci Filmschool te Brussel, draaide in 2003 en 2004 haar eerste kortfilms en in 2006 haar eerste documentairefilm. Zij ontving prijzen op verschillende festivals voor haar realisaties.

‘De Maagd en het Kind’ mag dan wel een fictieverhaal zijn, het is des te meer gebaseerd op een geschiedkundige en maatschappelijke realiteit. Namelijk de genocide en slavenhandel die heeft plaatsgevonden in Iraaks Koerdistan op de Jezidi-bevolking. Met ‘La Vierge à l’Enfant’ schetst Bêrivan Binevsa een tragisch verhaal over een individueel en collectief trauma. Het Filmfestival te Oostende wordt de wereldpremière voor dit indrukwekkend meesterwerk.

Het verhaal gaat kort geschetst als volgt: “Avesta, een Koerdische Jezidi, arriveert in Brussel na te zijn ontsnapt uit de handen van de Islamitische Staat in Irak. Het enige waar ze op zint is wraak nemen op de man die haar daar als slaaf heeft misbruikt. Tussen een verwoede zoektocht naar gerechtigheid, die haar confronteert met het leed dat ze heeft doorstaan, en de verplichting moeder te zijn van een ongewenst kind, probeert Avesta koste wat het kost haar stem te laten horen”.

Op donderdag 1 februari om 16.30 uur is er een tweede voorstelling in de Kinepolis te Oostende. De kortfilm ‘Orange Flavored Love’ maakt die namiddag deel uit van het voorprogramma. None other than Bêrîvan Binevşa is the maker and director of this film. Bêrîvan, our loyal colleague from the French-speaking wing of the Kurdish Institute, is definitely not making her debut. She studied at the Inraci Film School in Brussels, shot her first short films in 2003 and 2004 and her first documentary in 2006. She received prizes at various festivals for her achievements.

‘The Virgin with the Child’ may be a fictional story, but it is all the more based on historical and social reality. Namely the genocide and slave trade that took place in Iraqi Kurdistan against the Yazidi population. With ‘La Vierge à l’Enfant’ Bêrivan Binevsa sketches a tragic story about an individual and collective trauma. The Ostend Film Festival will be the world premiere for this impressive masterpiece.

The story is briefly outlined as follows: “Avesta, a Kurdish Yazidi, arrives in Brussels after escaping from the hands of the Islamic State in Iraq. All she wants is to take revenge on the man who has taken and abused her as a slave. Between a frantic search for justice, which confronts her with the suffering she has endured, and the obligation of being the mother of an unwanted child, Avesta tries to make her voice heard at all costs.”

There will be a second performance on Thursday, February 1 at 4:30 PM in the Kinepolis in Ostend. The short film ‘Orange Flavored Love’ is part of the supporting program that afternoon. Below is a summary of the dates and times, including a link to purchase tickets for both performances.
