The University of Ghent will host a public debate to discuss the ongoing purges of Turkey’s academia which some have argued amount to an “academicide.” Since the attempted coup in Turkey on 15 July 2016 almost 6,000 academics have been dismissed from their positions in the country, 15 universities have been shut down, and almost 70,000 students remain imprisoned as of the end of 2016, which accounts for one-third of the total number of prisoners in the whole country.
